A romantic triangle leads to complications on an archaeological expedition in Southern Mexico 1954 American Adventure Romance Film by United Artists An archaeologist named Robert Burton wants to find the remnants of the ancient Toltec civilization in a remote area He is annoyed when he is sent a female photographer named Kathryn Williams to assist him They meet a plantation owner named Juan Cervantes who agrees to be their guide However both Robert and Juan become attracted to Kathryn creating tension and jealousy They also face dangers from the natives who capture them and plan to sacrifice Kathryn on a pyramid Robert and Juan manage to escape with Kathryn but Juan sacrifices his own life to distract the natives The film was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Cinematography Black-and-White The film was not a commercial success but it has since been praised for its atmospheric cinematography and suspenseful plot It has also been cited as an early example of the jungle woman film genre which often featured white women being captured and forced to live among primitive tribes The festival shown early in the film is the Danza de los Voladores de Papantla in Veracruz Mexico Five voladores 'birdmen' ascend a pole as high as 45m While one of them remains at the top playing a drum and a flute the four others representing the Gods of Sun Wind Earth and Water gradually descend by swinging around the pole on ropes tied to their ankles which unwind from the pole as they go round Director Reginald Le Borg Stars William Lundigan Peggie Castle Armando Silvestre Alternate Titles Turkey Ormanlar Melikesi United States Creatures of the Jungle adventure romance
