Conflict erupts within a close-knit engine company of a fire department when a black recruit and a bigoted white veteran clash during a wave of suspected arson in the ghetto 1973 American Action Drama Film Ernie Bush is a rookie firefighter who joins Engine Company 23 in Los Angeles He is the first black firefighter in the company and faces racism and hostility from some of his colleagues especially Sonny Caputo a veteran who resents his presence Ernie also has to deal with the challenges and dangers of fighting fires in the city especially in the ghetto where arson is rampant and gangs are violent He finds some support and friendship from Billy Dalzell a young and idealistic firefighter who wants to make a difference He also falls in love with Michelle Forsythe a social worker who helps the victims of the fires Ernie tries to prove himself as a firefighter while coping with the pressure and prejudice he faces He also helps to expose and stop a conspiracy involving arson corruption and murder that threatens the lives of many people Firehouse was directed by Alex March who also directed several other films and TV shows such as The Big Bounce 1969 and The Streets of San Francisco 1972-1977 The film was shot on location in Los Angeles using real fire trucks and equipment It was released in 1973 by Metromedia Producers Corporation and Stonehedge Productions It received mixed reviews from critics and audiences The film was also a pilot for a TV series that aired on ABC from January to May 1974 The series starred James Drury as Capt Spike Ryerson replacing Vince Edwards Director Alex March Stars Michael Lerner Paul Le Mat Val Avery
